About this deal

Tequila is made with rigid standards. For starters, tequila can only be produced from blue agave, while mezcal can be made from 28 varieties of agave. Kowalewski, Stephen A.; Feinman, G.; Finsten, L.; Blanton, R.; Nicholas, L. (1989). "Monte Albán's Hinterland, Part II: The Prehispanic Settlement Patterns in Tlacolula, Etla and Ocotlán, the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico". University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Museum of Anthropology Memoir 23. 23. It is a common mistake to presume mezcal to tequila are the same, but there are differences. Mezcal is made from various agave plants, while tequila can only be made specifically from the Blue agave plant.

Some would tell you that this tradition has its roots in an age-old litmus test. If an agave worm dropped into a bottle was still wriggling by the time it reached the bottom, the tequila was safe to drink. If the worm died before it reached the bottom, the tequila was deemed unsafe for human consumption. Turns out, you’ve been misled. Yes, tequila worms are real. And yes, you can still find them in bottles. There are a couple of things you need to know, though.

There are numerous ways to chase down a foul shot of tequila, such as water, soda, fruit juice, or more bizarre combinations. Let's find the best chaser for tequila. The tasting was (in our case) standing at a bar, without much of explanation on how should you drink mezcal, and most of the samples were just flavored Jovenes (the younger and cheaper kind). I discovered during my research that tequila does not traditionally have a worm in it, though mescal does. Admittedly it’s commonly called the tequila worm, but that is all it has in common with tequila. It could serve as a prank or be offered to someone you’d rather not see again. Monte Alban Mezcal Review: Is it good?

Mezcal is traditionally from Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Michoacan. Tequila comes from the Jalisco region.

Contrary to popular belief, seeking out brands of tequila with a worm in the bottle isn’t going to help you find a more flavorful drink. The worm doesn’t add anything to the alcohol.

For individuals who enjoy exploring and analyzing various types of spirits, this Mezcal may offer some curiosity as it offers a wide variety of chemical flavors worth examining. a b Redmond, Elsa M. (1983). "A Fuego y Sangre: Early Zapotec Imperialism in the Cuicatlán Cañada". University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Museum of Anthropology Memoir 16. 16.Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or just dipping your toes into this world, I invite you to join me as we explore the fascinating realm of these legendary spirits. The General Wine Company is committed to providing its customers with the best possible wine experience. They actually aren’t worms at all.

Before the tour groups finally get there, use the toilet, get all the organization information, etc., you’ve already taken a hundred pictures of the empty place and got to the South Platform. There are two main myths about how the worm got into the bottle. The first is that it was put in the bottle of mezcal as a marketing ploy, and it worked! Symmetry was not a major concern for the layout of Monte Albán plaza. Although the angles within the plaza are not perfect 90-degree corners, the plaza appears to be a rectangle without actually being so. The structures are not laid out in a symmetrical fashion, as the distances between the structures vary greatly from building to building. Construction methods used for orientation changed as Monte Albán expanded. Early structures, on the western side of the plaza, are rotated south of east, while later structures align more with the cardinal directions.

The history of tequila and the tale of the worm does make interesting reading and a great marketing strategy to keep drinkers entertained about the myths surrounding this little larva. If you’re new to Mezcal and curious about exploring this incredible spirit, I strongly advise against starting with Monte Alban. This is the juice that made me aware Mezcal was even a thing, I shot tons and tons of this stuff starting around 1994/95. Many fond memories of getting absolutely hammered with good friends and having great times but it tastes nothing like the quality Mezcals we all enjoy today. a b c Blanton, Richard E. (1978). Monte Albán: Settlement Patterns at the Ancient Zapotec Capital. New York: Academic Press. If you insist on drinking it out of curiosity or for a prank, do it in shots finishing it as fast as you can.
