If AIDE is our future, and let’s face it, it more than likely is, because we’re well on the way there, then it’s a troubling thought. Fantastic character development, If you love a good police procedural, mystery with a bit of a twist in the dynamic of characters I really enjoyed this one. DCS Kat Frank has had a really tough time personally, she's been away from work for a while after the death of her husband. The relationship between Kat and her son Cam was heartfelt and realistic (coming from a childless person though sooo? Számomra ugyan elég kiszámítható volt, hogy mikor milyen irányt fog venni a történet, de ettől függetlenül nagyon élveztem, és végig erősen szurkoltam Katnek és Locknak, hogy az ügy végére járjanak.

With its different image settings and ethnicities Lock can transform into a 3D hologram of a human, a visual experience that I imagine would be quite astonishing. k.a a robot, as part of the Home Secretary’s latest pet project to improve and advance policing, and minimise bias and prejudice.I loved the AI-angle and it was so well executed, shining light on dilemmas with AI in a easy to grasp way where you saw the pitfalls at the same time as the potential for AI. The characters already are well established and you know exactly who they are and what they’re about which I liked. Picked to lead a pilot programme that has her paired with AIDE Lock – an AI detective – Kat’s instincts collide against Lock’s logic. But you can't deny that the speed at which AI can learn and spit out info is a huge value to humans, especially law enforcement. In fact, I did check a couple of times to see if our lead, Detective Chief Superintendent Kat Frank had featured in previous outings.

I don't really do sci-fi either but I found the concept of using nearly sentient AI to assist with detective work to be utterly fascinating. It may sound a little far-fetched, but when we look around our world today, there's certainly the possibility that this could happen . A detective mystery with an AI element added to it, I wasn't sure how I felt about LOCK at the beginning, but I really loved the human vs AI interaction in the cases. Essentially In the Blink of an Eye is a police procedural, Kat and her squad conduct interviews, investigate clues and gather evidence to explain the fate of the missing men.Kat and her boss are cynical about politicians' intention to cut resources / officers and replace them with technology not capable of nuance and intuition. When I started reading, I was afraid it would be too sci-fi-ish for me, that I would lose interest, because AI would be used as a prop and mocked, but none of those things happened, instead it is bit like the Stephen King film from the beginning of the 2000s, A.

She is tasked with running a new pilot programme which pairs AI's with humans to solve cold cases of missing people. Lock proves to be a god send when it comes to data, accessing publicly available information and analysing it at incredible speeds no human could compete with, whilst the police conduct interviews.

Sorry to go all philosophical on you guys, but good on the author for tackling such a controversial, moral, and ethical issue, and incorporating it into a police environment in the novel way that she did. It follows the usual crime procedural in that you have a team of detectives but which includes AIDE (Artificially Intelligent Detective Entity) Lock.
